“The Better Half” By Quell Collections

“Good for Goodness Sake” is the tagline for Baltimore Bred designer Quintel Harcum from Quell Collections. He explains that “doing the absolute best with what you have, doing all things in good taste, and developing your own idea of luxury” is the way to go. I couldn’t agree more with this statement, and with his newest Capsule collection, “Better Half” (exclusively for women) – I witnessed, yet again, his well thought out and exquisitely minimal pieces. Being in the game for 10 years, Harcum has a keen eye for style when it comes to unisex apparel. I’ve visited a couple of his local pop up shops and was particularly impressed with everything from the set up, to the lay out, to the clothes itself. Even his stories behind his ideas and collections are intriguing. When you hear him speak, you know it’s coming from somewhere that is meaningful and passionate.

Coming from a background of creativity and branding, Harcum took his skills to the next level after seeing a Y-3 Adidas advertisement in GQ magazine back in 2005. Harcum used his graphic design skills to tap into a newer and fresher outlet, fashion design. I’ve seen him mainly push the men’s wear in the past, however not necessarily limiting women’s appeal in his creations. So I think it was special for the designer to only focus on women’s wear this time around – bringing a collection of comfy, distressed tees, oversized denim shirts, and cheeky printed, bright statement shirts. Shout out to the ladies.

With the sporty luxe trend  still going strong (on top of collecting a couple or few fresh pair of cool sneakers), “The Better Half” collection is ideal for the girl who wants to maintain her chicness yet modern flair. I’ve even rocked a satin baseball cap from one of his previous collections, and not only is that hat one of my saving grace pieces for a casual day, it can even work for a more glam look. Every time I see Harcum out at an event, I make sure to get some inspiration from him. Someone from the hard city of Baltimore who can still provide us fashionistas the best of both worlds is an ace in my book. I love to see brands keep simple pieces exhilarating with great details and rawness, and that’s exactly what Quell Collections brings to the world of fashion and design.
